This report by Karen L. Mapp and Eyal Bergman was commissioned by Carnegie Corporation of New York that explores the dynamics and barriers that stand in the way of effective family-school partnerships and outlines how to reach a more liberatory, solidarity-driven, and equity-focused family engagement practice that supports educational excellence for all children.

COVID-19 and systemic racism are forcing a recalibration of family-school partnerships. The authors issue a call to action to address the often-ignored and unspoken dynamics that prevent the cultivation of effective partnerships between families and educators based on

• an asset, rather than deficit based approach to families
• school professionals and families co-designing the future of school, and
• the so much necessary mindset and practice change of the school and professionals working in it.
